The Government of Botswana has heeded the calls by their film industry for the establishment of a film commission, and the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development will establish the Botswana Film Commission - a strategic organization with a mandate to promote and develop Botswana as a competitive destination for the creation of film, television and multi-media productions.
The production of film and television is a lucrative, booming business internationally, driven by the global demand for audio-visual content, the rise of streaming services, the growth in youth audiences and the ubiquity of mobile viewing platforms. The value of the global film and video market is expected to reach a value of $318.2 billion by 2025, and $410.6 billion by 2030. The main role of the Botswana Film Commission is to attract a percentage of this global production and investment to Botswana, and then ensure that the economic value of the investment is spread throughout the country and its citizens.
The Botswana Film Commission’s role includes the promotion of Botswana as a destination of excellence for international and domestic film and television productions. They will ensure that Botswana is fully developed as a destination of excellence, and that Botswanan labour and businesses are fully prepared to be hired on any shoots that arise from these activities. Ensuring that film companies can successfully realise their productions and spend the maximum amounts of their budgets in Botswana is part of their mandate, as is assisting Botswanan filmmakers to develop the skills and networks to reach new markets.
Building a flourishing film and television industry is one of the avenues by which this can be achieved, and a strong Film Commission provides a dedicated department and specific mechanisms to promote Botswana as a potential film location and facilitate foreign shoots. In building a flourishing film and television industry, a Film Commission not only creates jobs and stimulates economic activities, but it also creates a range of knock-on benefits of the people of Botswana.
